"Star Tide" is the latest creation by Ji Rui, a stainless Damascus-clad Magnacut gyuto. It features a Magnacut steel core hardened to 65 HRC, flanked by 95 layers of nickel Damascus forged in-house on each side, for a total of 191 layers of composite
construction.
Magnacut is a modern powder metallurgy stainless steel engineered for high hardness and superior corrosion resistance. It also has a narrow, unforgiving heat-treatment window and can be prone to warping or cracking if the thermal cycle is anything
less than precise. The addition of fully manual, in-house laminated nickel Damascus elevates the complexity even further, creating a build with an exceptionally high risk of failure at every stage, making this knife an even more astounding
achievement.
The blade has been deeply etched to highlight the silvery nickel Damascus layers. Under changing light, the pattern ripples and gleams across the surface, like starlight reflecting on shifting tides, true to the name "Star Tide."
As with Ji Rui’s best work, the blade carries an aggressive taper from 5.6 mm at the heel down to 1.6 mm near the tip, paired with an extremely well-rounded, mirror-polished spine and choil. In hand, this delivers a remarkably comfortable balance
point and a secure, effortless finger rest. Taken together, "Star Tide" stands as a singular fusion of modern metallurgy, demanding hand-forging, and nuanced finishing, truly a one-of-a-kind creation.
