Xinguo x Makaida Blue2 Wrought Iron Twist Damascus
We are pleased to introduce this collaborative piece by Xinguo and Makaida.
This series is constructed using the traditional Warikomi method, The cladding is built upon Wrought Iron, whose fibrous character and natural texture contribute depth and subtle movement to the finished surface. By incorporating additional steels into the laminate, the Damascus develops contrast and layered complexity, revealing organic transitions after etching.
At the core of the blade lies a Blue 2 steel, chosen for its fine grain structure, excellent edge stability, and responsive sharpening characteristics. The combination balances cutting performance with durability suitable for practical use.
The forged blanks were produced by Makaida and subsequently ground, refined, and finished by the Xinguo team. Edge geometry was carefully adjusted, the distal taper refined, and the spine and choil eased for improved comfort. Surface preparation and etching were precisely controlled to bring forward the contrast between the wrought-iron-based Damascus and the core steel.
Each blade carries natural variation in texture, tone, and pattern development. No two pieces are identical.
About Ma Kai DaBorn in 1985, Makaida graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Process Equipment and Control Engineering from Shenyang University of Chemical Technology. He spent nine years working as an engineer before formally dedicating himself to bladesmithing in 2018.
With over 8 years of bladesmithing experience, he built his foundation through disciplined practice and persistent study. In the early stages of his career, he focused on studying and recreating renowned works from around the world, using the process to refine his understanding of structure, geometry, and finishing. Today, our collaboration marks a shift toward developing a more distinct and personal direction in his craft.
