Description

“Yu-botaru” is one of the seven experimental single bevel knives collaborated by Hashimoto-san and Takahashi-san as part of their ongoing exploration into Damascus single-bevel blades.

The steel used for its cladding carries a remarkable history. Originally forged between 2013 and 2014, it was created by compacting and reworking scrap from earlier Damascus billets—steel that had once been destined for other blades but left dormant on the shelf. Through repeated incorporation and folding, the billet reached an extraordinary recorded layer count of 112,091,886 + 42x, the “+42x” signifying the unknown layers of scrap folded forty-two additional times. What might have been discarded was instead reborn into a material of staggering complexity.

For this piece, Hashimoto-san chose the Deba form, believing that the thickness of the blade would preserve the delicate strata of steel. His decision was also informed by the sharpening expertise of Takahashi-san, whose career-long familiarity with heavier blades ensured the piece could be brought to its full potential.

The core steel, a high-carbon Damascus forged by Hashimoto-san in 2013, consists of 1,665 layers of Hitachi steels and two undisclosed alloys, further deepening the blade’s narrative of experimentation.

The resulting pattern recalls “Suisen”—a broken ladder motif—but with a distinctive, swaying dot formation. These dots resembled fireflies rising into the dusk, inspiring the name “Yu-botaru.” Within the blade’s surface, brighter single-layer steels contrast with darker, multi-layered regions where the resentment of scrap metal still swirls.
