JianYi Zhang is one of Xin Guo’s apprentices and the founder of the kitchen knife brand “JianYi Zuo.”

He loves knifemaking. Iron and fire, food and craft—it all seems to run in his DNA. Making knives frees him from the anxiety of his former work and daily life, helping him rediscover a sense of inner order and peace.

He has no formal training in design and considers his talent for craftsmanship modest. Yet his understanding of knifemaking and his aesthetic sensibility allow him to connect with those who share his vision. His original intention was simple: to make a knife he himself found beautiful. He hopes to “unfurl a canvas” upon the blade, treating each knife as a work of art and breathing life into it.
